International Meeting Security Update: IMG Reissues Guidance for Protestors in the Wake of the Dallas Shooting

In March of this year, IMG Group, a leading international meeting security firm, issued tips to individuals attending or protesting Donald Trump rallies. This was done in response to a series of violent incidents that occurred at or around these gatherings. In the wake of recent events, IMG Group feels that it is necessary to reissue these tips. This is due to both the recent Dallas shooting that killed five police officers, and protests that have been sparked by the tragic deaths of two men shot by Police.

Every American has the right to protest and demonstrate for issues they think important, and allegations of racial bias by law enforcement are a concern of central importance to millions of Americans. By their very nature, demonstrations are emotionally charged events that are easy to escalate. As such, protestors and demonstrators should keep the below tips in mind to help ensure that protests are conducted in a safe, secure, and effective manner.

After the Dallas Shooting: 3 Tips to Increase Individual Safety and Improve Event Security at Protests

Dallas Shooting

  1. Comply with Reasonable Requests from Law Enforcement and Security Personnel – Despite the obvious tensions between protestors and Police, individuals attending demonstrations should comply with reasonable requests from law enforcement and security staff. The more time these personnel have to spend with non-cooperative individuals, the less time they have to attend to other, potentially more urgent, event security matters. This is especially critical in the aftermath of the Dallas shooting, as many Police officers will be, understandably, on edge.
  2. Understand the Terrain and Identify Nearest Exit Routes – Another way to increase personal safety and event security is to understand the environment. Attendees of a protest should familiarize themselves with the venue or area of demonstration. They also should identify multiple exit routes, not just one, as some egresses could become backed up or blocked in the event of unrest. Most importantly, individuals should depart if they become uncomfortable with the security environment. After all, it will be more difficult to leave safely once disorder breaks out.
  3. Do Not Provoke the Other Side – Protestors should do nothing unreasonable to provoke law enforcement, security personnel, or counter-protestors. In this heated political environment, words can quickly turn to violence and violence can quickly spread out of control. Advocating for, or protesting against, an issue can definitely be done in a responsible and controlled manner. However, attendees should refrain from the following actions: taunting, shouting obscenities, throwing objects, making threatening gestures, using lewd insults, or damaging property.
